The Paintings of Zoë Ann Fischer
I have followed the art making journey of the painter, Zoe Ann Fischer, for the past two years, and feel enriched by the experience of her friendship and of her openness in sharing with me her creative process. Zoe is a very talented landscape painter, a colorist and a good one. A keen sense of color combined with an appreciation of and sensitivity to the visual aspects of mountains, sea and sky, have been translated into canvases that really excite the viewer. They are luminous, alive and gutsy. Through her alchemy with paint, putting down layer upon layer, often over long periods of time, Zoe has infused her canvases with her own strong feelings for the natural wonders of our planet. Her deep emotions for her subjects come across and touch the viewer.
As an abstract painter myself, I see Zoe's work not only as depictions of nature, but also in terms of the actual components of painting itself, such as color, surface, edge, form and shape. These paintings stand up well when viewed from that perspective, and in truth, are really abstractions too.
Most recently Zoe has embarked on a series of cloud paintings, and I experience in these magnificent canvases not only the aliveness, motion and myriad visual effects that continuously populate our sky, but the miracle of what an inert substance like paint can become in the hands of a gifted artist.
Zoe, like all true artists, is clearly on a voyage of exploration and discovery in her work, and I am appreciative that she continues to share it with me.
